The buildings here
Cottages and single-storey homes on large wooded lots. Many were well built originally and have never been reworked in depth since. It is an area where people maintain and improve, rather than move elsewhere.
That changes the very nature of the projects. You have no intention of selling in three years, so you do not optimize for appearance: you optimize for durability.
What we're asked for most
Bringing the kitchen and bathrooms up to the real standard of the house, which most often calls for custom work rather than modules. Extending toward the garden. Replacing a porch at the end of its life with a structure built to last as long as the building it extends.
The area's own challenge
The lot. Large wooded lots come with their own tree-cutting and siting by-laws, and setbacks are closely watched there. Here an addition is designed according to what the zoning allows, and not according to what the size of your lot might suggest.
It is a point to check before drawing. We have seen fine projects die over three feet.
The quality of the original construction. These houses often have sound framing, which is excellent news, and materials from another era, which calls for adapting the way the new is tied into the old.
